One of the latest technology trends in interior design is a feature that I hope to implement in many of my client’s homes. Imagine having your kitchen counters and refrigerator doors function similarly to a giant iPad, with internet connected, interactive touch displays. According to Microsoft Home this could be a reality within the next five to ten years. Right now it sounds like a farfetched idea and the thought of having to replace all of your existing appliances probably sounds like an expensive proposition. However, I have good news! The Microsoft Home kitchen uses a projection display to beam information onto the surface of your existing countertops or refrigerator doors.
What’s even more incredible than Microsoft’s prototype is its “Vision” video, which gives insight into the future of how touch displays will function in the next five to ten years. This video demonstrates a female building a product on a touch tablet:
Touch projection technology is already being used by a select few and is expected to grow significantly in the near future. Currently a restaurant in London called; Inamo projects their menus from the ceiling onto the tables, as well as the diners “tablecloths”. Customers then order from the touch display projected on the table; the menu also includes interactive games, and service for ordering a cab. Essentially the technology is something of a gimmick, designed to simply entertain customers and improve their overall experience.
